Content marketing for creative entrepreneurs redefined

Content marketing sounds intense. Super business-y. Sort of intimidating. You know what I mean?

I think it scares creative entrepreneurs off.

Content = “You mean I need to keep coming up with things to say and do over and over and over again. On multiple platforms? WTH am I supposed to say?! Why am I doing this?!”

Marketing = “You mean the thing I’ve been struggling with on its own? Without adding the daunting ‘content’ part to it?! Umm, no.”

I get it. That’s why I think we should call it something else. Content marketing redefined for creative entrepreneurs.

How do you feel about the sound of…

Being yourself. Sharing your knowledge, ideas + stories about things that fire you up. Connecting with like-minded people. Encouraging and coming alongside others who need what you have… (I’m talking on Instagram, on Facebook, on your blog, on Snapchat, with your newsletter…all the places you have an opportunity to say something)???

I like that better. I hope you do, too, because content marketing (or aforementioned new name above) is something creative entrepreneurs need to get onboard with, like right now. (Don’t freak out! Grab our free Content Creation Kit to get started!)

Maybe you’ve been trying to avoid it? Even if you have, I’m guessing you’ve still felt its eyes staring you down as you pour time and energy into other areas of your business. It won’t go away because it’s vital to every other aspect of your business. You might as well look this thing straight in the face and say, “I see you! You don’t scare me anymore! I have important things to say!”

I don’t expect you to just take our word for it. You are not a robot or a puppet. You are a brilliant and creative business owner. So, just like in every other area of your business, you need to be the one who says, “Okay, yes…I get it. This is important and I’m committed to giving this a big, beautiful try.”

So, let me tell you why we’re making a big deal about this and think you need to, too.

Here’s the most important thing you need to know. If you forget everything else in this post, please remember this…

Intentional, valuable content is the missing piece. It is the bridge that connects your dream clients (hanging out over there) to you (hanging out over here). Smart content is your marketing plan. When done right, hundreds and thousands of people who don’t know you yet, will not only learn who you are but trust what you tell them.

Can I get a mic drop? Am I allowed to do that on my own blog?

But seriously, do you see why you can’t avoid this (or, only give it a half-ass try) any longer?

Besides that one monstrous main reason, I want to fill you in a handful of smaller reasons why we focus on creating content on our blog, with our newsletter, on Instagram (including IG stories!) and on Facebook (including FB lives!)…

Here are the top 4 platforms we focus on + why they’re important

Blog (We blog 2-4 times/month.)

  • Good for SEO, which means your people can find you on the www! If you are a lifestyle family photographer in Salt Lake City and someone Googles “lifestyle family photographer in Salt Lake City” you want to be the photographer she finds, right!?
  • Builds an incredible trove of resources for your current + future clients! You can include these in your workflow to create an even better experience for clients!
  • Positions you as an expert in your industry.

Newsletter (We send a weekly newsletter to our list.)

  • Your list is your own to keep, forever + ever! Facebook can’t take it away. You don’t have to play by Facebook’s rules either. You get to say whatever you want, whenever you want, to people who want what you have to offer. Boom goes the dynamite.
  • Immune to social media algorithm changes!
  • You can lead your tribe through your ideal customer journey, adding value + making money! Imagine personally emailing every new person that subscribes to your list and letting them know what you’re all about and what you can do for them. Imagine them liking and you even more because you’re transparent and generous.

Instagram Stories (We shoot for sharing purposeful stories almost every single day.)

  • Super quick + authentic way to connect!
  • Videos give viewers instant gratification! Think how quickly people scroll these days. How quickly they click from one thing to the next. Short snippets of video entertain easily. Your people get a fab idea of who you are in a hurry.
  • It’s a fun creative outlet that also benefits business big time!

Facebook Live (We go live on Facebook once/month.)

  • Helps you stand out from the crowd; not everyone is brave enough to do it!
  • Opportunity to show personality and excitement for what you do!
  • Positions you as an expert in your industry! I mean, if you’re brave enough to push “Go live” you have important things to say. You have a message to share. You have people to connect with and help and influence. You stand out.

This is just the beginning. We’re not going to just tell you why this is all so important and then leave you hanging…

  5. This is all so important and I do admittedly drag my feet doing a lot of the said things above. Content… even as a photographer that word just seems so irritatingly daunting haha! I have a plethora of images to choose from but not always what to say and sometimes I feel like I don’t have anything to show and it just becomes a back and forth battle. I love focusing more on sharing all content and letting my audience know who I am, what I love, what I do and why through various platforms. I want to connect with people and my clients/potential clients and the best way to do so is let them into my life and watch it be reciprocated!

Totally agree, Christine! Love how you let them into your lives. It’s so fun to encourage and come alongside clients in their personal lives. Makes it more of a friendship, less of a business transaction.
